Fleet Mechanic

McLean Contracting Company is looking for experienced Fleet Mechanics to join our growing team in the Chesapeake, VA region. Fleet Mechanics are responsible for diagnosing, preventative maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles, ensuring they are in good working condition, safe and ready for operation.

Essential skills

  • Performs a variety of tasks involving diagnostic, troubleshooting, inspection, preventive, and repair work to various on road and ancillary equipment
  • Ability to read, understand, and evaluate operations, maintenance, blueprints, service, and parts manuals.
  • Inspects and utilizes all “tools of the trade”, including diagnostic equipment such as electrical meters, hydraulic gauges, micrometers, and other testing devices.
  • Prepares service sheets and written service reports.
  • Demonstrates ability to proficiently burn with a propylene torch, rig materials and equipment
  • Inspect/operate any Heavy Equipment for which a certification has been obtained.
  • Cleans and maintains all tools and performs user maintenance as needed.
  • Must meet Department of Transportation physical guidelines.
  • Must be able to work on back on dollies, under equipment, and in cramped or awkward spaces. Requires the agility and balance to traverse and work from floating equipment.
  • Prevents and/or corrects unsafe conditions as the need arises. Timely reports any incident or injury to their Foreman.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  •  Five (5) years related experience and /or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Skills and Abilities

Must be at least 18 years old, have reliable transportation to work, and be able to pass a Department of Transportation physical/drug screen and obtain a DOT medical card.

Must be able to obtain a Class A/Class B driver’s license, once legally eligible to qualify.  Must be able to pass a Homeland Security background check to qualify for a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
