This project was for the Department of the Navy located at the Norfolk Naval Station in Norfolk, Virginia. McLean joint ventured with American Bridge to deliver this best value contract to the US Navy. This project replaced an old existing concrete carrier pier with a new state of the art double decker concrete carrier pier. The new pier is 1600 feet long by 93 feet wide. The pier design featured 36 and 54 inch prestressed concrete cylinder with a precast prestressed concrete pile cap. The lower deck design utilized precast concrete deck panels and fascia beams. The upper deck was cast-in-place concrete structure. The project also included a 635-foot x 46-foot wide relieving platform that consisted of a concrete sheet pile bulkhead and a concrete pile supported relieving platform that utilizes precast deck panels. The demolition included the existing 1300-foot X 52-foot wide pier, an existing 800-foot X 30-foot cellular sheet pile breakwater system, and 8 each existing timber pier structures. The scope of work also included dredging within the footprint of the new pier and significant mechanical and electrical package to maintain the carrier and logistic fleet when docked at the pier.
