Piers & Bulkheads, Design BuildCoal Pier Construction with Barge Unloader and Conveyor Tube Erection
Owner : Mirant Corporation
Location : Morgantown, MD

McLean partnered with Moffatt & Nichol to deliver this design build project to the Mirant Corporation. This project was located at the Morgantown Generating Station located on the Potomac River in Morgantown, Maryland.
The project involved construction of a 550 ft. long by 55 ft. wide concrete coal unloading pier, including crane rails and fender system, supported by 36” diameter pre-stressed concrete cylinder piles, construction of a new concrete mooring dolphin, construction of a new transfer tower foundation and new conveyor line foundations supported on steel pipe piles. The project also included erection of over 1,000 ft. of conveyor tubes and the erection and testing of a new rail mounted coal barge unloader. The barge unloader was partially erected in McLean’s facility in Baltimore and transported by barge to the jobsite where it was off loaded with a heavy lift crane and erection and testing were completed on site.
The project was notable in that, while not a design/build project, design work proceeded concurrently with construction. The entire project was completed and operational in 7 months from the commencement of design work.
