Piers & BulkheadsCofferdam Retention Structure and Water Main Relocation
Owner : Maryland Port Administration
Location : Baltimore, MD

This project was for the Maryland Port Administration at their Masonville Marine Terminal Facility.
McLean’s contract with the MPA includes construction of 295 ft. of center bulkhead, 1,152 LF of sheet pile cellular cofferdam, 935 LF of subaqueous pile supported 48” diameter water line and the thrust block cofferdam at the tie in of the new 48” water line to the existing.
The sheet pile cells are 69 ft. in diameter made up of 132 PS31 sheet pile, 80 feet long. The 1,152 cellular cofferdam is made up of 14 cells.
The thrust block cofferdam is probably one of the toughest that McLean has tackled. The existing water line is at elevation -37.0 ft. below the harbor. The cofferdam is constructed around the existing line and most contain a tremie seal to allow dewatering of the cofferdam to make the tie in. The ends of the cofferdam must also be sealed around the existing water line to resist the water pressure and seal the cofferdam around and under the pipe.
