McLean Contracting Company was the managing partner for a 4-way joint venture team of local contractors that included E.V. Williams, RR Dawson, and Bryant Contracting that brought our talents together to tackle this challenging project. This project’s scope included the replacement of an existing two lane twin leaf bascule bridge over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River with new twin 5,262-foot two lane, fixed span, high rise bridges, plus 3.5 miles of roadway widening and improvements and seven additional interchange bridge structures.   The new bridges consists of prestressed bulb tees and a cast-in-place deck supported on mass concrete hammerhead on twin column piers and cast in place footings.  The footings are founded on 16” to 30” prestressed concrete piles.  Post tensioned spliced bulb tees are used on the main span units of four bridges. McLean’s responsibility included the demolition of the existing bascule bridge, the construction of 15 spans or 2,372 feet of each of the twin bridges over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River and two new bridges at the Cedar Road Interchange. Our scope included the spliced bulb girder erection for all four bridges. The main span for the twin bridges included 222’-6” – 285’ – 222’-6” for a total unit length of 730 feet.
