This challenging design‑build project provided design and construction services to replace the existing 88‑year‑old historic swing span bridge over the Perquimans River with a new truss swing span bridge that preserved the historical heritage of the original structure. The project also replaced a deteriorated existing earthen causeway with a fixed‑span structure. To address vessel collision protection, the project incorporated small‑vessel “extreme event” load combination design, polymeric pile design, and a 100% composite marine fender system.
The completed bridge measured 2,688 feet in length, including a 196‑foot steel through‑truss swing span. The project included realignment and widening of US 17 Business from south of the Perquimans River Bridge to north of the US 17/NC 37 intersection. McLean Contracting Company strategically assembled a team of experts—including RK&K, Hardesty & Hanover, Branch Civil, Steward Machine, and EHM—to successfully deliver this complex project.
The project was completed in October 2023 and received a Carolinas AGC Construction Excellence Award in 2024.
