Employment at McLean
Bringing Peace of Mind to Those We Serve
McLean’s purpose is to bring peace of mind to those we serve. We want all of our employees to know that they are valued, appreciated and free to be who they are at work. Our employee lifecycle processes are designed to prevent discrimination regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender or disability status. We recognize that a diverse and inclusive workforce makes us a better company, and we will continue to expand our efforts in this area. We know this is the right thing to do for our all of our partners and stakeholders.
McLean is a unique employer offering several different career tracks and paths based on your education, experience, and interests. Whether you are interested in a professional position in one of our office locations or a craft position directly on one of our jobsites/construction yards, McLean offers a variety of opportunities. McLean offers several “Career Ladders” to guide employees through their development.
We are fortunate to employ many multi-generational families as part of our hardworking crews. We have parents/children, siblings, and cousins working together. McLean has a rich history of employees desiring a career at McLean because they have relatives who worked here their whole careers. It is not unusual to see employees on many of our jobsites and in our crews who have worked here 15, 20, 25 and 30+ years.
McLean is a 100% Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Company. Rather than ownership by one or a few members of the management team or outside investors, the company is entirely owned by employees by virtue of their employment by the Company.
We work hard to ensure the success of our employee-owned company! McLean’s success is our employees’ success. We take pride in bringing each of our construction products to an efficient and profitable conclusion. This takes an effort from everyone working as a team to get the job done.
The ESOP plan is managed by an outside third-party administrator who ensures the plan complies with Federal regulations. Each employee has an account that includes shares of company stock.
- The amount in each account is determined annually by a formula that includes the number of employees, valuation of the Company and other variables
- All contributions to employee account are made by McLean, and employees receive annual notification of the value of their accounts.
- Employees do not contribute anything towards ownership of Company stock, nor are they able to voluntarily buy or sell shares of stock.
- Employees receive a taxable payout of their account only upon termination or retirement from McLean.
Because every employee is an owner of the Company, employees are motivated to work together towards producing excellent results. This pride of ownership is the secret of our success.
Over the years, in concert with OSHA and various state occupational safety agencies, our management team has developed a robust safety program that addresses the risks and hazards associated with our industry, such as working over water or at great heights. Led by the Director of Safety, our team of Safety Coordinators are tasked with jobsite safety inspections, policy application and problem solving for the challenges that are presented with each new job. Job site supervisors participate in daily planning for safety, analysis of means and methods, as well as performance analysis.
All new employees are instructed in safety during new employee orientation and receive training on all relevant rules and policies. Every employee is provided with personal protective equipment, such as hardhats and life-vests, as well as any task equipment necessary to complete the job. Many of our employees also receive specialized training, such as confined space or CPR/First Aid training.
McLean’s philosophy is that every employee is responsible for safety. We know that our employees are the most important asset, and their health and wellbeing are our number one priority. In addition to offering health, dental and vision coverage as part of our benefits package, we have established a smoking cessation program and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
We are proud to be a 100% employee-owned company and we are proud of the work our employees do to make us successful every day!
