Owner : Maryland Transportation Authority
Location : Newburg, MD

This complex $463M design build project is for the replacement of the Governor Harry Nice Bridge on Route 301 that spans the Potomac River connecting Maryland and Virginia. McLean is part of a joint venture team with Skanska and Kokosing that is replacing the existing, two-lane bridge with a new 1.9 mile by 61-foot-wide, four-lane structure, including roadway realignment and construction of approximately 0.5 miles on either side of the bridge. The improved span will have four 12-foot-wide driving lanes with two-foot shoulders, and the new height will accommodate tall vessels on the Potomac. The new bridge will utilize an All-Electronic Tolling (AET) system. Once the new bridge construction is complete, the existing bridge will be demolished and some of it will be used to create artificial reefs in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The 12-foot-wide lanes with 2-foot shoulders will double capacity and improve safety, enhancing emergency response and maintenance/inspection activities for this MDTA facility. The joint venture partnered with AECOM to provide the lead design services for this contract.
