Harry W. Nice/Thomas “Mac” Middleton Bridge Replacement

Owner:
Maryland Transportation Authority
Location:
Newburg, MD

This complex $463M design‑build project replaced the Governor Harry Nice Bridge on Route 301, which spanned the Potomac River connecting Maryland and Virginia. McLean was part of a joint venture team with Skanska and Kokosing that replaced the existing two‑lane bridge with a new 1.9‑mile‑long, 61‑foot‑wide, four‑lane structure, including roadway realignment and construction of approximately 0.5 miles of roadway on either side of the bridge. The improved span included four 12‑foot‑wide driving lanes with two‑foot shoulders, and the increased vertical clearance accommodated tall vessels navigating the Potomac River. The bridge incorporated an All‑Electronic Tolling (AET) system. Upon completion of the new bridge, the existing structure was demolished, and portions of it were repurposed to create artificial reefs within the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The 12‑foot‑wide lanes with 2‑foot shoulders doubled traffic capacity and improved safety, enhancing emergency response capabilities as well as maintenance and inspection activities for this MDTA facility. The joint venture partnered with AECOM to provide lead design services for the contract.
